The Great Fire of 1875
From Destruction to Renewal
One hundred fifty years ago, a stray spark from a passing locomotive ignited what became known as The Great Fire of 1875. The flames leapt the Lehigh River and swept through Graystones Preserve, consuming sawmills that once lined its now-renowned trout stream. In the aftermath of destruction, nature reclaimed the land — giving rise to the stunning 200-acre Open Meadow that now graces the heart of the Preserve.
Today, at the highest elevation of that very meadow, a new chapter is taking root. This spring, Graystones Preserve will begin cultivating a 50,000-square-foot tended flower and vegetable garden, thoughtfully positioned to command the Open Meadow's most breathtaking southern views. Where fire once reshaped the landscape, careful stewardship now brings forth abundance. The garden stands as a living expression of renewal — ash transformed into harvest, history into hope.

A Living Landscape
An Ever-Changing Tapestry of Color and Fragrance
Designed as both a working garden and a living landscape, the tended beds will offer an ever-changing tapestry of color, fragrance, and seasonal bounty. Early spring greens will give way to vibrant summer blossoms, heirloom vegetables, and fragrant herbs. As autumn approaches, the garden will deepen into rich hues and generous harvests, reflecting the natural rhythm of the land.

Thoughtful Placement
Preserving Sweeping, Uninterrupted Vistas
Its placement was chosen with intention. Flowing gracefully from the beautifully landscaped community lawn and pool complex, the garden extends the experience of the Open Meadow without interrupting it. Rather than enclosing the pool alone, a thoughtfully integrated perimeter surrounds the broader lawn, pool, and garden area, preserving sweeping, uninterrupted vistas while maintaining the privacy and exclusivity reserved for Graystones property owners and their guests.
Here, at the meadow's highest point, residents may stroll among flowers in bloom, gather produce at its peak, or simply pause to take in the stillness of open sky and rolling landscape.
Born of history. Rooted in stewardship. Shared in community. At Graystones Preserve, the land continues its story — and invites you to become part of it.
